The Colors of Textiles & Shibori

On 3 October 2026, the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Burapha University, organized “The Colors of Textiles & Shibori”, creating a shared learning space for art, craft, and design through the knowledge and practice of textile tie-dyeing and natural dyeing.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Mr. Chaipon Paepiromrat, Vice Governor of Chon Buri Province, and was attended by university administrators, faculty members, staff, students, representatives from government agencies, artists, alumni, and community networks at the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Burapha University.
The event was welcomed by Assoc. Prof. Dr.Sakesan Tonyapirom, Dean of the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts. The exhibition also featured Ms. Saruda Kantawong, a master craftsperson and alumna of the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Burapha University, and Mr. Sakjira Wiangkao, a textile pattern designer and Burapha University alumnus, who shared the concepts, origins, and inspiration behind the works presented in the exhibition.
From Local Wisdom to Design through Hands-on Learning
The morning program began with a special lecture and a Natural Dye Shibori Workshop led by Ms. Saruda Kantawong. The workshop provided opportunities for Burapha University students and staff, as well as members of communities from Chon Buri, Rayong, and nearby areas, to learn through direct practice.
Participants explored the entire creative process, from material preparation and pattern development to tying, folding, shaping the fabric, and applying natural dyes.
The activity reflects the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts’ commitment to creating a “shared learning space” that extends beyond the classroom. It enables the university, communities, artists, and alumni to exchange knowledge and experiences through meaningful collaboration.
In particular, bringing the expertise of alumni back to the university and passing it on to younger generations represents a tangible connection “from seniors to juniors, and from the university to the community.”
Preserving Eastern Thai Identity and Creating Value from Cultural Capital
Another key focus of the project is the transformation of cultural capital, local wisdom, and natural resources through artistic and design thinking.
These resources can be reinterpreted and developed into distinctive creative works and products, while also generating new economic opportunities for local communities.
The The Colors of Textiles & Shibori exhibition therefore goes beyond presenting the visual beauty of textile patterns. It demonstrates how traditional knowledge can be reinterpreted through contemporary design and contribute to a more balanced development of society, the economy, and the environment.
Art and Design Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals
The project is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
- SDG 4 – Quality Education
Creating opportunities for lifelong learning, transferring skills from experienced practitioners, and increasing community access to knowledge and creative learning. - SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
Encouraging the application of art and design skills to careers, product development, and the creative economy. - SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
Promoting the value of cultural heritage and local identity while encouraging community participation in sustainable development. - SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
Promoting the use of natural materials and dyes, together with responsible and resource-conscious approaches to production. - SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
Strengthening collaboration among the university, government agencies, artists, alumni, and local communities.
The project also supports Burapha University’s mission in arts and cultural preservation, with an emphasis on conserving, sustaining, and further developing artistic and cultural knowledge while connecting it with education, design, community development, and contemporary society.
“From Alumni to the Next Generation, From the University to the Community”
The Colors of Textiles & Shibori represents another meaningful platform demonstrating the role of art and design in connecting the university with society.
By transforming local wisdom and regional identity into creative possibilities, the project contributes to learning, collaboration, network building, and the creation of sustainable cultural and social value.
