The 68th National Art Exhibition and the 39th Contemporary Art Exhibition for Young Artists

The 68th National Art Exhibition and the 39th Contemporary Art Exhibition for Young Artists were initiatives that built upon the legacy of Professor Silpa Bhirasri, who first established the National Art Exhibition in 1949. This exhibition series aimed to foster public understanding of contemporary art and stimulate the creation of high-quality art pieces through competition. Over the years, it became a symbol of continuity in the development of Thai art and an essential platform for disseminating contemporary art to a broader audience.

In 2024, the Faculty of Fine Arts at Burapha University committed to organizing the 68th National Art Exhibition alongside the 39th Contemporary Art Exhibition for Young Artists. The goal was to allow the eastern region of Thailand to experience the aesthetic values embodied in national-level art pieces. This exhibition was not only a stage for renowned artists but also a vital opportunity for young talents to showcase their work and further develop their artistic skills, blending local cultural heritage with international influences.

The exhibition served as an inspiration for youth and the general public by presenting art in an accessible manner that highlighted the diversity of contemporary creativity. It featured award-winning pieces from the National Art Exhibition and the remarkable works of emerging young artists. This effort fostered learning and encouraged a deeper appreciation for the value of art within society.

The event was organized jointly by the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Burapha University and Silpakorn University’s Art Gallery. It took place from April 10 to May 31, 2024, at the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts Art Gallery, Burapha University, in Chonburi Province, with an official opening ceremony on April 25, 2024. The project began with collaborative planning meetings between the two institutions to establish guidelines for the event. Award-winning works were carefully transported from Silpakorn University to Burapha University, where they were meticulously arranged in the exhibition space to highlight their beauty and unique artistic identities.

The outcomes of this exhibition extended beyond raising public awareness of contemporary art. It inspired young people and emerging artists to refine their skills and create works that reflected Thai cultural identity on an international stage. Additionally, the exhibition fostered partnerships between the university, the community, and other art organizations, contributing to the sustainable development and preservation of cultural heritage for future generations.

This exhibition also aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11: “Sustainable Cities and Communities.” By integrating art, culture, and community engagement in sustainable ways, it promoted accessibility and awareness of contemporary art’s value. The event enhanced public participation in the conservation and development of art at both local and national levels.

In the context of SDG 11, the exhibition contributed to sustainable community development by creating a space for creativity and open cultural exchange. Hosting the exhibition at the art gallery ensured the optimal use of cultural resources, enabling equal access to cultural learning opportunities. Viewing the exhibition offered the public an avenue to appreciate art as a crucial element in the sustainable development of communities and cities, in line with SDG targets 11.2 and 11.4.
